De-Spamify Now!

So your site is starting to look a bit like a hollow advertising junkyard? Maybe you don't have enough resources to write your own original content, so you just throw in a few links to websites that do? Perhaps you've written some pretty darn good pages, but nobody knows how to find them? Here's a few easy tips to de-spamify and improve your website's overall value.

  • Invest time in a proper /start page. Put some content on there.
  • Ensuring you change "put your title here" to "Welcome!" (or anything else).
  • The start page is for internal links only (these are links to other pages on YOUR website).
  • Change your /nav:side page to have links to the main areas of your site.
  • If you don't have the time to write up original works, don't compensate with links to external sites. Instead use the phrases "under construction" or "to be continued". Let's be honest, we'd rather your visitors not disappear to somebody else's website.
  • Reduce the number of external links in your site overall.

In case you hadn't noticed, "external links" is a key factor that determines whether or not your site is spam. The reason for this is because there are a lot of spam websites out there that have a huge database of external links to websites. They do this not for the viewer's sake, but for the sake of "Search Engine Optimisation" (SEO). It's a way of tricking Google/Bing/Yahoo and other search engines into listing the spam websites higher than all of the other websites.

So by reducing the number of links to external websites, you're reducing your site's likeness to a webspam site.
